Fermi, Enrico (1901–54),Italian-born Nobel Prize physicist who, after the Italian government had adopted
anti-Semitic laws in 1938, emigrated to the USA because his wife was Jewish. In 1934 he had discovered that metal became much more radioactive when bombarded with neutrons slowed down by water or paraffin, and these early experiments became one of the vital keys to unlocking the secrets of nuclear power. After working on slow neutron bombardment with another émigré physicist,
Leo Szilard, at New York's Columbia University, he directed the first controlled release of nuclear energy. This experiment, which took place in a squash court at the University of Chicago in December 1942, confirmed that an
atomic bomb was possible. See also
